Pat Stacey, writer, college teacher and former editorial staff member of The Atlantic Monthly will discuss her memoir about her son. The Boy Who Loved Windows. She will present the day-by-day story about how Walker was saved from a path leading to autistic isolation. She will detail her first hand account of the new model of research and treatment pioneered by Stanley Greenspan, M.D. that makes this recovery for others. Walker, whom pediatricians worried would never walk, talk or perhaps even hear and see, was lucky enough to be born to a family who refused to accept defeat. Pat will reveal the darkest fears, struggles, exhaustion, tiny victories and eventual joys her family faced as they gradually brought Walker into full contact with the world.
(MY NOTES): Stanley Greespan M.D. is the doctor that was working with the Stacey family. He had helped 200 children. Here was a man that found a way into the brain and heart. The cost was going to be $1000 per session with the Dr. Their insurance and charities helped with the cost.
Dr. Greenspan wanted them to do something really scary. Interact with their son Walker. The child was difficult to reach. Walker needed interaction with people more then with toys. People are more important than things. Each time Walker could prove he could do things. Dr. Greenspan wanted them to do more. The parents had to make Walker work for everything he wanted. Babies are very social. Babies with autisms are very sensitive almost like having a hangover. (INFANT): Walker had to interact with an adult almost every waken hour. (AGE TWO): One of the ways they could help Walker was with wooden puzzles. They would have him take a piece of the puzzle and tell them a story about it. He had motor skill problems. People with autism don''t have the motor skills to laugh on time. They would laugh well after a joke was told. The therapy was a ble to keep his attention on the same page. You need really rich interaction. As the child matures you have to play games with them. Like cops and robbers. Walker liked to play Harry Potter. This was a way to develop intellectual skills.
(10 yrs. old): Walker and girlfriend Nissa favorite thing about Nissa was (it) she was cool.
Alot of the illness is in the gut. The kids gut isn''t processing food right and it leaks into his gut.
(12 years old): Walker''s mom has a few more years to polish the stone. Intellectually Walker is brilliant. Very intelligent. If she hadn''t worked with him, he would be mentally retarded.
Walker is very enthusiastic. Over the years his manner has become subtle. Now she has to work on making him cool.
O.T. to help with his hyper ability. He doesn''t get P.T. He gets speech classes. The school in Gil MA is very opened ended. It is important to not be satisfied with one doctors diagnosis. Pediatricians and most doctors do not know enough about autism.
The brain is always learning and always changing.
These are all of my notes from Patricia Stacey''s presentation. I hope this helps.
