9. Each student will research and write a paper on a topic related to public health or public health education. a. Potential topics might include any of the core topics presented in either IOM text, and taking a particular issue to a more complex level. The topics might include: identify and further explore one specific aspect of population health and or a determinant; the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in assuring the health of the public; the role of religious communities in assuring the public’s health; critically analyze a section of the health care delivery system (public, private, governmental, etc) and its role in assuring the health of the public; investigate a specific piece of new or existing legislation as it relates to the public’s health; explain or justify if health (care) a right or a privilege in the US or other parts of the world?; analyze Healthy People 2010 (and/or the 2 preceding documents) and the impact this document has or has not had on public health in America; examine the interrelationship between health status and learning; research the link between illiteracy and health status, or take one of the issues brought up in “Who will keep the public healthy” and take expound on it further. There might be a topic not identified about that a student wishes to pursue in greater depth and this is allowable, with permission from the instructor. The instructor will approve all topics, before students embark on their research. b. Conduct research about the issue. If looking at a historical situation, provide some background about the time and beliefs of the era. If you are looking at a social issue, be well versed on the issue (including relevant and up-to-date statistics) and the magnitude of the issue on people and their health. c. Provide any other pertinent information that affected this public health issue. d. The paper will be 12-15 pages in length [excluding cover page], double-spaced, and presented in APA format. A minimum of 12 references will be used and cited. The paper is due December 1th, no later than 11 p.m. and will be submitted via the Assignment Drop Box. References should be no more than five (5) years old (2003) unless subject matter is dated, e.g., a topic form which older references are essential.
