Your task will be to find the historical causes of a current event. For example, if you were a student during the Vietnam War and had to trace the historical causes of the conflict, you would have to research how Vietnamese nationalism grew from the French colonial experience. You would then investigate how World War II gave the Vietnamese the opportunity to oppose France’s return, leading to the involvement of the United States. As this is a modern American history course, I will not require the student to trace historical causation prior to 1876. A current event is defined as a newsworthy experience occurring within the past year. I have included a sample paper and grading rubric for your review. All written work will be correctly formatted and cited in accordance with MLA style. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain a style manual and format the papers and citations accordingly. Incorrect citations and format will be penalized. Students will double space using Times-Roman twelve-point font with left alignment (non-justified). Students may want to reference http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/ for style and format guidance. Submit your paper as a word document enclosure on the assignment page. Students will have the option of submitting their papers for early review no later than two weeks prior to the due date. This date is firm and will not be adjusted. These papers must be in final form and not a rough draft. These early papers will be graded with comments for improvement and returned to the student no later than one week prior to the due date. The student then has the option of keeping this grade, or may resubmit a corrected version paper by the original due date for a better grade.
