As you begin to focus on an organization, pick one of the Fortune 500/1000. Many of these companies have extensive web pages, numerous articles written about them in varied periodicals, and usually have annual reports posted or available in print format. The CEOs for many of these companies have extensive bibliographic information printed about them, and the companies are more “visible” for your organizational communication assessment. You might review any advertising or print media reports concerning these companies to help in your perspective/assessment. Once you have selected your company, begin to review the materials concerning the company. You are specifically focusing on the issues of “Strategic Organizational Communication” and the manner in which the company handles “Organizational Change and Communication.” Areas to exam: 1. Organizational Chart—Where are communication functions coordinated—or are they? 2. What is the Organizational environment—within and outside? 3. Who are the internal and external stakeholders? 4. What communication tactics/strategies are employed? 5. Who are the multiple publics served by and serving the organization? 6. What would be the environmental scanning issues that this organization faces? 7. Does the organization have any organizational plan of action to respond to these issues? 8. What SWOT assessment has been created or would you suggest for this organization? 9. How has the organization branded itself (image, public perception)? 10. What internal communication is used to understand employees and help employees understand the organization? 11. What media relations are present—are they internal or external practitioners? How effective? 12. Is there any indication of a risk or crisis communication plan for the organization? If so, what are its strengths/weaknesses? If not, what organizational risks might be a focus of such a plan? 13. How is marketing handled within the organization (part of the public relations function, or integrated function? What marketing opportunities have been identified? 14. Is there a marketing plan? 15. When reviewing the communication materials of the identified organization—did you perceive any ethical issues? If so, how might the organization respond to them? 16. How is the organization developing and sustaining organizational change? (chapter 11) 17. What types of organizational development can be identified for the organization? 18. Is there an identified communication strategy or communication plan? If so, how well developed is it? If not, how might the organization go about developing one? 19. Has the organization recently gone through change—how was this communicated? 20. What is your overall assessment of this organization’s strategic communication plan?
