Type this passage (single-spaced, and include the page number in end parenthesis) at the top of the first page of your essay. Then, write one or two paragraphs that demonstrate a close reading of the passage. You must interpret the language itself, the words and phrases themselves. Then explore where/how the language has multiple, complex meanings and symbolism. Lastly, explain how this passage effects the story itself. What impact do these words/sentences have on the character /tone /conflict /symbolism /theme of the story. Explain using specific detail. Each of you should and will choose different passages for these essays, based on your own interests and perceptions. This is what makes for good discussions! Don’t try to pick the obvious, or seemingly “right” passage. Trust your gut and your mind. This assignment allows you the opportunity to sharpen your close reading, critical thinking, and analytical skills with regards to reading and writing about literature.
