Parents let their preschool sons roam farther from home than their preschool daughters, and they subtly encourage boys to participate in more rough-and-tumble play even to get dirtier and be more defiant. Such differences lie at the heart of the sociological explanation of male-female differences. (p65 )In other words, through gender socialization, different behaviors and attitudes are encouraged and discouraged for men and women. [In other words, individuals learn what is considered masculine (and therefore male) and what is considered feminine (and therefore female)]. Using toys as are medium, we are going to test whether there are true male-female “differences.” For this essay, go to a local store that sell toys for children. As you peruse the aisles, examine what toys you find for children. Pick at least two toys (one you think would be for a male and one for a female). Was this decision easy? How did you decide? Are gender differences obvious? If so, explain how. What cultural messages do you think the toys send? How do they contribute to a child’s socialization process? In your opinion, what toys did you find that do not show gender preference? How are they different from the toys you chose above?
